This message comes from Joe Cannon of the Macksville Amateur Cycle Club, about a ride to raise funds for ROMAC (Rotary Oceania Medical Aid for Children). Anyone interested?
On April 12th & 13th this year, our club was involved in the ROMAC (Rotary Oceania Medical Aid for Children) Ride for a Smile. The ride is held at Coffs Harbour Velodrome and the challenge is to complete 500km in 24hours – that’s 1500 laps of the velodrome!
It’s a great cause and a great endurance event and so the club decided to get involved.
We’re a small club – just 18 members and I wondered just how much we would be able to contribute. Here’s what we managed:
- 1 Solo rider that completed the whole 500km
- 1 team of 4 riders that completed the whole 500km
- 2 other members in another team that completed the 500km
- 5 other members that were pacing through out the day and the small hours of the morning
AND
- We raised $3,655 in just 5 weeks.
Not bad for a membership of 18. 66% involvement.
The more I am involved with this amazing charity and event, the more I want to do, so now what I’m doing is talking to other cycling clubs. The ride is on again on September 27th 2008 and organisers are looking for riders.
Let’s have a Cycling Club challenge!
I challenge your club to do the same, or better, than our club. What do you say? Are you up for it?
It is not a race but a charity ride your members have to be able to ride at around the 28 to 30kph.
Read more in the attached brief & Application Form, visit the web site (http://www.romac.org.au/news/coffs) and let’s see which Cycling Club can produce the best results!
Best wishes,
Joe Cannon

I think this sounds good. If we got a team(s) of six that’s only around 83kms each at an average of about 25kms per hour (if we rode from 10am-6am). That’s even do-able for me.
I would like to be in a team if anyone else is interested.
