In a performance reminiscent of Cadel Evans’ win into Montalcino in the Giro D’Italia, Al O’Hara blitzed the field in a combined A/B/C grade criterium on Saturday 29 May.
Run under appalling conditions which forced the organisers to shorten the race to 2 minutes + 1 lap, Al put in a monster attack from the gun which completely demoralised the field. He took the win by a huge margin with daylight second, third and fourth.
The only blemish on his performance came when he was fined $50 by the commissaire for an inappropriate victory salute. But even that failed to daunt Al’s joyful celebrations, who said after the race “that seemed to go on for hours. I had to dig deeper than ever before, and if it hadn’t been for the plate of scones with jam and cream I had at Caffiends on Marsh this morning I never would have made it”.
