Col wins NSW Masters

June 3rd, 2010 · 8 Comments

Col Maciver won two titles in his division of the NSW Masters Championships held in Moruya on the South Coast over the weekend of 15-16 May. On the first day was the road race, featuring two laps of a 17.5 km course, with the critical section occurring in the last 3 kilometers to the finish line involving a climb from the Moruya River to the ridge top above Moruya.

Most of the first lap proceeded at a fairly steady pace with only a few riders willing to take the lead. From the outward crossing of the Moruya River to the second turn-around Col stayed on the front and rode reasonably hard up the hill to the finish line at the end of the first lap to try and thin the field out a bit.

Racing 29 May 2010

May 31st, 2010 · 2 Comments

In a performance reminiscent of Cadel Evans’ win into Montalcino in the Giro D’Italia, Al O’Hara blitzed the field in a combined A/B/C grade criterium on Saturday 29 May.

Run under appalling conditions which forced the organisers to shorten the race to 2 minutes + 1 lap, Al put in a monster attack from the gun which completely demoralised the field. He took the win by a huge margin with daylight second, third and fourth.

The only blemish on his performance came when he was fined $50 by the commissaire for an inappropriate victory salute. But even that failed to daunt Al’s joyful celebrations, who said after the race “that  seemed to go on for hours. I had to dig deeper than ever before, and if it hadn’t been for the plate of scones with jam and cream I had at Caffiends on Marsh this morning I never would have made it”.
