Without even throwing his leg over the top tube, Luke “San Remo” Milan has won the inaugural Armidale Cycling Club Road Racer of the Year competition today. Jo Wauch was unable to bridge the gap at the top of the league despite a valiant solo effort where she broke away from her Go group on the outward leg of the 30K handicap on the tough Boorolong course. Needing to win this penultimate race of the series to still have a chance of topping the table, Jo was clearly not leaving anything to chance as she turned almost 2 minutes ahead of her group and with 1m:20s on the next rider. Unfortunately for Jo, despite a typical gutsy solo time-trial, she could not quite stave off the big bunch and finished a handful of seconds behind the winning rider, out of the points.
In near perfect racing conditions, an interesting race unfolded with a few more mid-race attacking moves than normal but the might of the scratch group proved too much in the end with Johnny powering home for victory from Dave Munday to ensure the Cannibal claimed all 10 points, cementing his 3rd place in the league and cracking the 100 point barrier in the process.
It was great to see Chris Stace and Darren Schaefer coming back for more racing with Darren claiming a notable 5th spot today on the back of his joint 1st last week, and also a welcome return for our handicapper Col who honorably placed himself in block despite not having raced in over a month since his masters victories. Paul Williams continues to impress in block as does our new home page poster boy Clint Bourke who seems to have suffered no ill-effects since his mid-week Tour de Red Lion. Kirky would have finished in the top 5 if he hand’t fallen on his sword and nobly decided to go back to search for a rider who’d actually finished ahead of him – a true mark of the man who clearly know’s what’s going on – thanks Kirky 😉
Thanks to Luke for running the race, handling the complex sign posting process (with help from Murray Scown) and for managing to capture times at the turn and the finish without breaking sweat. Congratulations again to San Remo on the RROTY victory and no doubt we’ll have a celebratory lap or two next week at the TEC when we have a switch in times for the Junior Championships. Senior racing will be a criterium which commences at 2:30pm, followed by the Junior Championships at around 4pm. Please come along to support our junior riders even if you’re not racing yourself. We’ll have a barbecue and some cold drinks and all are welcome. More details on the website soon.
