After threatening to do something special since the joining the club at beginning of the year, John Scott-Hamilton came up with the goods with a powerful time trialling performance to win round 2 of the club championships.

The race was held on Dangarsleigh Road on Saturday 4 July in cold and windy conditions, starting at the 15km mark and racing back to the finish line at the edge of town.

Riders started at 15 second intervals, with John the 17th rider to go at 4 minutes. Within the first few kilometres he had reeled in Andrew Kirk who started immediately before him, and by the finish had overhauled the entire field to record a brilliant time of 22:45. At an average speed of just over 40kmh, this was an exceptional effort under the conditions.

The last rider to start and pre-race favourtie Mitch Bullen came close but couldn’t quite match John’s time, finishing in second place with a time of 23:04. Third place went to Mick Hoult (23:31), with Andrew Kirk fourth and Jamie Stanley fifth. Because Jamie was visiting, the fifth place championships points went to the next rider Pat Ainsworth.

B grade was won by Lachie McPhie, continuing his good form from the previous week on Longswamp. Bill Mara was second while Ashley Saint put in a “most improved” effort to take third place. Peter Creagan and Wilfried Keller filled the minor placings.

Dave Rubie took the honours in C grade from Mark Haydon who was on the comeback trail, with Steve Dignam third and Ray Phillips fourth.
