Buoyed by the continued warm weather and the extra hour of daylight, 36 riders rolled in for what was billed as a scratch race but became a handicap at the last moment. More new faces were on show with Paul Williams, Clint Bourke and Theron King making their racing debut (early disclaimer – I’ve quite possibly mis-listed them in the results to please put me right if so).
A single lap meant less visibility of gaps for riders mid-race and everyone appeared a little more cagey as a result. At the turn it looked like Dave Jenner had gritted his teeth for the cross-winds on the way home in a solo effort but the 3-minute group were working really well and stayed together and in front of the hard-chasing 5-minute group.
Things stayed pretty-much the same until after the turn. Then into the wind things changed. The 12-minute group picked up the 10:30 and 9:00 group and this bunch then drove it home hard with Dave and Harrison Munday, Andrew Swan and Col Maciver sharing the brunt of the effort on the final climbs.
Dave Jenner crossed the line for a fine victory, followed 13 seconds later by a rapid line of Jo Wauch, Katherine and Peter Hosking, Chris Stace and Karlee McMillan. Pete Creagan punched in shortly after for the fastest time at that point with his fitness definitely returning. Back up the road things were building up for a grandstand finish in the big bunch. Apparently a little scheming was going on and a Tindale-inspired slingshot with Harrison almost paid off in the final kilometre but the pair were chased down and the bunch split in the process. Munday junior still had enough to pip Col and Dave on the line but all three shared the fastest time on of 45:18, a shade under 40Kph for the day.
The rest of the fractured group rolled over, notable performances including a great result for Paul Williams on debut and Mick Hoult looking dangerous on come-back, only 3 seconds down on the fastest time of the day.
40 seconds later the big scratch guns came home with the lean-looking Johnny, Sam Jenner, Blanchy and Mick Sherwood sharing the same time.
Thanks Lachie for running the race and doing the signs and Rhys Williams for the finish line camera work shots which gives us to-the-second times.
