Hugh Munday took line honours this afternoon out-sprinting his rivals at the end of the handicap race on Boorolong and claiming 10 valuable RROTY points in the process that elevates him up to 2nd place overall in the 2015 Road Racer competition.
In near perfect racing conditions, 17 riders were sent off up the road chasing Bob Murison as the sole Go rider. Bob was going well and at the turn still had a good gap on the chasers but they were massing behind him and inevitably the larger group outgunned his solo legs on the homeward leg of the 30K course. Hugh was part of a 4-strong seven minute group that were pursued by another lone rider 60 seconds back – one Billy Mara – with the remaining 12 riders split into large block and scratch groups of 6 riders each. Block went at twelve minutes and scratch at fifteen which looked a long shot from the start.
At the turn, the confident block group knew weren’t going to get caught and so set about catching the riders ahead without having to spend too much nervous energy looking over their shoulders. From the finish line video it was a mass sprint between Hugh, Wilf and Billy and the Block riders who had stayed together up to this point. It looks like Kirky led them out and peeled off but held on for third as the hard-charging Hugh Munday powered home for a well-earned victory from Swanny.
Incredibly, this means Kirky now sits on top of the Road Racer league with 11 points from 2 events. Hopefully this will be sorted out before too much longer or we’ll never hear the end of it. Scratch did at least make some inroads into block allowing Mick Sherwood to claim fastest time on the day at a pretty healthy 39.2kph.
Update: 12th April – Due to a “computer error” we had Kirky sitting on top of the league. Fortunately this has now been corrected and Wilf has pushed him down into second spot. Sorry for any confusion or panic this situation has caused. We can cancel the ACC extraordinary general meeting now as well.
Well done Hugh on a fine first road race victory in his first Boorolong Handicap race. Thanks also to Captain Creagan for putting the signs out and running the race. Now time to visit the masseuse and rest-up those legs ahead of Thunderbolt Roubaix tomorrow morning!
