Following our previous news from Bathurst, Sam Jenner backed up his great performance in the hill climb with a ride that saw his Subaru NSWIS team take out all top 3 places in the Elite Criterium. Sam spent the race covering breaks and was constantly at the front right up to the last lap when with 500m to go he pulled off and let his teammates take the top honours in style.
Sam’s turn came on Sunday in the 110K road race when his team once again rode strongly and were well organised. After their performance the previous day they were firm favourites and had consequently covered a lot of attacks early in the race but missed one with around 12 riders that gradually become significant and needed reeling in. His team mates took up the long chase once again and this time delivered Sam and Ayden Toovey to the foot of the hill with around 20K to go. Sam lit it up straight away and was soon sitting in the lead bunch looking good when he had a mechanical and had to get off his bike. With road rapidly running out he was paced back on and still managed to get himself over the line in 5th place overall and as the first U19 rider – a fantastic effort.
So a great weekend for Sam Jenner and the Subaru NSWIS team and also for our other Armidale winners Col Maciver and Jo Wauch. Next weekend Sam is heading over to Mt Buffalo for the National Junior Mountain Climb Championships – good luck Sam!
