Use of Disc Brakes in Competition

We have been advised by Cycling NSW today that bikes with disc brakes are not permitted in mass-start events, including scratch and handicap races. It is acceptable to use them for time trials and cyclo cross events.

They have stated that one of the reasons for this is that the discs are viewed as an ‘unguarded blade’ and therefore could be a hazard in the event of a mass crash. Cycling NSW have advised that they anticipate UCI reviewing this ruling and that changes would be put into effect eventually (although this may take until 2017).

While the news is frustrating and will impact a number of our club members who have CX bikes they would wish to use for club racing, we must abide by this ruling and failure to do so would impact our insurance cover.
