This is exciting news! The Armidale Cycling Club is seeking to implement a new cycling event that specifically caters to riders who are new, or very inexperienced, to road cycling as well as to those who are already riding competitively and are looking for another opportunity to keep track of their training.
This event is proposed to be run every second Sunday morning at the Traffic Education Centre on Mann St Armidale, which is a closed 1200-metre bitumen track circuit with just enough corners and elevations to make it interesting, but not so great that it will trouble inexperienced riders.
The goal is to increase overall road cycling participation in the community by providing participants of all ages and experience with an organised, safe, regular, timed ride event. It will require riders to complete as many laps of the traffic free track as possible within an allocated time. Depending on age, experience and ability, riders may nominate to ride in categories that cater for juniors (from 5-17), recreational riders or experienced riders. Each category will be run separately in order to maintain a safe number of riders on the track at any time and to avoid inexperienced/recreational riders feeling intimidated or uncomfortable being on the track at the same time at the more experienced and faster riders.
This format is unique to the road cycling discipline and it is not clear whether this type of event is held anywhere else in the country. We think that the club could very well be pioneering a new road-cycling format!
But before we get too excited, we need the help of volunteers to get this concept off the ground and make it a reality. The Club is looking for a group of enthusiastic individuals who are passionate about increasing the overall road cycling participation in the community. There are a number of volunteer roles to fill (e.g. marshals, timekeepers, photographers etc) and as the saying goes – many hands make light work. If this sounds like you then shoot a quick message to Chris Stace on +61434 001 787 to let him know before 15 June. Any questions about any aspect of the event can also be directed to Chris.
