A great turnout for the first race of spring had 29 riders at the start line. Some civilised self-selection of grading meant that all 3 grades were well attended, although the handicapper will note that following his recent Zwift “sandbagger” controversy cat-burglar Bourke was back in B grade action.
The grades rolled off the line at 1 minute intervals, and although on road reports were hard to come by, by the turn A grade had a lead group of 4 with Dave Munday leading the charge and Cookie, Houlty & Hammy in close attendance.
A trio of Tom Simmonds, Pat Ferris, and Pete Harris chasers were in hot pursuit, although they inadvertently extended the chase by overshooting the turn! 1 minute back Jonny was leading out Swanny & Kirky, with the remaining pair of A grade riders Jason and Phil Hess not far behind.
B grade was far more civilised, with a large group of 7 led through the turn by Carl, with Clint, Lachie, Billy, Mitchell, Nathan and Chris Belson for company.
The last rider recorded at the turn was Bryn pulling a solo effort 50 seconds back, before the commissaires pulled up stumps to try and get back to the finish line. Its unclear whether it was Cols driving or some searing pace setting on the return leg, but the end result was both A & B grade beat the officials home!
Luckily the trusty GoPro caught all the action, with Dave Munday out-sprinting Houlty to take a well deserved A grade win, with Dave Cook pipping Hammy at the line to take out the final podium spot.
B grade also saw a tightly contested sprint finish, with Nathan edging out Clint for the win, with Mitchell taking 3rd spot on the line.
In C grade Captain Creagan rolled back the years to take a fine win, with Jo in second place and Paul Whitford an excellent 3rd place.
Thanks to Phil & Col for running the race. Next week see’s the final round of Road Racer of the Year, so its sure to be a hotly contested 30km of racing on Dangarsleigh!
