Saturday saw more warm weather with easterly breeze at the TEC, and there was an excellent turnout with 12 riders in A grade and 17 riders in a combined B/C grade combined.
After one lap neutral in each race, a hot pace was set by the B Graders, resulting in some of the C Graders not able to stay with the bunch. For a substantial part of the opening 10 minute period, the B/C grade bunch was matching the A Grade bunch. However, as time went on, the A graders picked up the pace and the B/C graders eased a bit eventually resulting in the usual tricky bunch overtaking manoeuvre. In accordance with Murphy’s Law, the overtaking took place going through the bottom bends making for lots of inter-bunch communication easily heard by those at the finish line and probably all the neighbours as well.
In the B/C Grader’s last lap, Bryn took off having not been put off by a failed solo break earlier to hold off a fast charging bunch resulting in 1st Bryn, 2nd Richard Wilkinson, 3rd Andrew May, 4th Mitchell Jones, and a post race clearing of the stomach for Bryn!
In the A Grade race, some hard surges late in the race saw a few riders dropping away. The winning move came during the last 3 laps with Michael Harris, David Cook and Dave Harris breaking away and stringing out over the last hill to finish in that order with small gaps between each of them. The remnant of the main bunch were close behind following some huge turns being done by Houlty and Kirky in a vain attempt to reel in the leaders. The battle for 4th resulted in a very close sprint between Pat Ferris and John Scott-Hamilton, and with the commissaires unable to split the pair, they were awarded joint 4th place.
Thanks to Shaun for running the race, and Col for the race report. See you same time & place next Saturday!
