Race report – December 28, 2019
15 riders turned up for the final 2019 race. Although hot, the air quality was great and the wind benign. John Scott-Hamilton and Olive Tutt had arrived in their skinsuits and were begging for a one-lap TT, but were outvoted by the rest. We also welcomed Tamworth rider Emily Hurcum, who is becomng a regular at Tuesday/Thursday rides as well as Saturday races.
Riders self-selected into two grades, leaving Emily to try her best with B grade. Olive tested herself in A grade, whereas Brent and Clint slipped into B Grade – despite some gentle derision and mockery.
A grade took off for a 35 minutes +3 laps jaunt; pitting Team Harris against the trio of John, Olive and Pete Harris (no relation). Michael immediately zoomed ahead and was only seen again by the bunch once he rejoined the back, having lapped them in about 20 minutes. His return saw some clever (dastardly?) tactics by Harris senior, which saw Holly jump off the front, butshe was reeled in pretty quickly by Pete and John. Olive had managed to hang in for most of the race but was finding the surges towards the end a bit much. Michael calmly attcked on the last climb up the hill and finished well ahead of John, Holly, Pete and Dave.
B Grade started together, but soon seperated into various groups. The first attack by Brent dragged along Clint, but no one else was able to bridge across, despite some valiant efforts during the next three laps or so. These desperate surges saw a second pair of Pete and Katherine Hosking about 30 seconds back, followed by another pair of Richard W and Andrew May. Further back, Isabella and Jo were unable to join up and kept circling the track in individual TT efforts. Once the gaps had been established the race continued pretty much along these lines with Brent easiliy outsprinting Clint for a good win (obviously his LAST as B Grader!)
Emily didn’t give up and celebrate her step-up into C Grade with a win.
Thanks to Col for expert marshalling Mchael and A Grade through the middle and keeping track of all the groups on the road. Also thanks to Wilf for race duty and posting this race report.
Back to the TEC next week for 2020 – a good time to make sure your licence is current.
