The scheduled Italian Pursuit race kicked off the last club racing for 2018. This involved sorting the 20 starters into two teams of 10. Handicapper Mick appointed two team captains, Ali Flyn and Jo Wauch who took turns to choose their team members with lots of distracting advice from all sides!
The teams start on opposite sides of the track at the cross-over point. Each team was roughly sorted from slowest rider first to fastest rider last and each rider had to set the team pace on the front for one lap before dropping out. All went well early with Jo’s team slowly building a lead until Carl had a flat which left his team one short. However, his team’s last rider Tom stepped up to the mark and did two laps to finish and despite a hard chase by Houlty followed by Paul, Tom managed to finish first for a win by Jo’s team. Maybe next time, team selection and team order may get a bit more serious!
Second and last event was a graded criterium with A Grade 25 mins + 3 laps, B Grade 20 mins + 3 laps and C Grade (Ladies + coach Wilko) 15 mins + 3 laps.
The ladies race stayed together until the last couple of laps which was a good experience in bunch racing for our newer racers, Jane and Ali. On the last lap, Jo broke away to win from Jacqui with Jane then Ali not far behind.
The B Grade race was a steady/hard effort from the gun which proved a bit too hard for PC to wrestle his retro steel frame repeatedly up over the hill leaving a group of 4 to contest the finish. Cagey Dave Jenner won the sprint from Dene, Greg and Alex. No doubt the lesson here is that you take Dave to the finishing straight at your peril!
A Grade similarly was a steady/hard effort from the gun with a few surges to no effect until a frustrated Kirky cut loose with 1 lap to go and Paul smartly got on his wheel. Kirky was last observed going backwards up Crit hill, and it was Hammy who kept going and took full advantage of the work done by Kirky to hang on by a whisker from the fast finishing Eagle. The rest all finished closely packed behind, with 3rd place taken by Jason followed by Rob H and Houlty.
Thanks to Col for the race report and running the race. We now take a break from racing until next year – we’ll be having no-drop social rides out on Dangarsleigh the next two Saturdays, so all welcome to join in!
