Geoff Straub continued his excellent form to take out the John Dewhurst Memorial Handicap Road Race on Sunday 27 April. Starting off the scratch mark, Geoff also took the prize for the fastest time, showing that he is one of the strongest riders in the region at the moment.
The race held over 60km and starting and finishing at Dungowan near Tamworth was contested by a number of Armidale riders, including Straub, Mitch Bullen, Dave Munday, Nick Myhill, Ole Mikkelsen, Billy Mara, Lachlan McPhie, Peter Creagan, Reece O’Hara and Peter Wilkinson.
All riders finished with the main group, with Mitch Bullen riding an excellent sprinters race, biding his time in the bunch to take the sprint for third place. Another performance worthy of mention came from our youngest participant, Reece O’Hara, riding his first race over this distance. Reece was unlucky not to take a place after his group was caught only 200 metres from the finish line.
This is the third year in a row the race has been won by an Armidale rider, following the successes of Chikka Russell in 2007 and Anthony Sozou in 2006.
A fantastic effort again from Straub, and by all accounts, a great day was had by all!
Nice work Strauby, a good race to win. Especially off scratch and with fastest time… That’s the way to do it!
