Junior Cycling
Armidale Cycling Club (ACC) has a proud history of developing juniors who love to ride for fun and fitness, as well as producing world class cyclists. The ACC aims to develop a wide range of cycling skills for juniors that can be applied to the track, road, mountain biking and beyond.
We believe that closed road circuit cycling provides a safe way for children to gain important skills and fitness which will assist them on bike paths and on the road – as well as the potential for a passion for a whole new sport. Our club is fortunate to have access to the Traffic Education Centre (TEC) at 2-16 Mann St Armidale – a 1200 metre bitumen track with just enough corners and elevations to make it interesting, but not so great that it is frightening for our littlest riders.
Who is it for?
The junior club is for young riders from 5 to 17 years of age and aims to teach basic riding, training and racing skills. Typically, each session will starts with a warm-up, then a 1 lap individual time trial and finishes with some time on bike handling and race skills. Sessions run for 60 minutes.
When a junior reaches 13 years or over and their skills/ability/attitude have reached an appropriate level, they may be invited moved up into graded/handicapped road racing.
New riders are welcome any time of year, and all are welcome to come along and see what a fabulous sport cycling is.
What does it cost?
The first 4 sessions for each participant are free of charge. To continue with the junior club beyond the fourth session, participants will need to purchase a race level membership. Race memberships start from approx $55.00.
We have a number of accredited coaches and club members who particularly enjoy working with children and our junior coaches do not charge for their services.
What to bring?
Participants need to have basic cycling skills (i.e. ride without assistance), a working bike (MTB or BMX or road-style are all ok), shoes/joggers, a helmet, close fitting clothes and a drink bottle.
Learning to ride a dedicated road bike with drop handlebars tends to come naturally to some children and we have a number of small club bikes available which suit children aged 8-15 years so they can have a try during the Saturday afternoon sessions.
When is it?
Every Saturday afternoon at 1.00pm AEST and 2.30pm during DST. Sessions run for 60 minutes. Check out the club calendar for the latest information about the sessions. If you enter “junior” in the calendar search box you’ll see all the junior events in a single list.
Where is it held?
The program is held at the Traffic Education Centre, 2-16 Mann St Armidale NSW 2350.
How do I get there?
We recommend that parents/guardians access the TEC from Mann St (that’s the 3rd gate when heading east) at least 10mins before the scheduled start time. Once you’ve entered the venue, ensure that you scan the track for riders before driving left onto and around the track in a clockwise direction. Continue on the track until you arrive at the parking area towards the end of the main straight, parking your car on the right hand side of the track.
