5 keen riders turned up on a very windy and blustery afternoon, with Laura, Thomas, Richie and Bernie being joined by newcomer Toby (sorry, Chris, didn’t take last names). Mark Bullen ran the session and decided to follow up the past two weeks’ intensive skills activities with a series of handicap “races”.
The first event, as always, was the one-lap TT around the 1200m track. Times are listed in the table at the bottom of this post, but there was a great first effort from Toby on a single-speed, and well done to Thomas, Laura and Bernie who achieved PBs.
Next event changed the direction by going anti-clockwise around the short track half-lap; all riders safely zoomed through the S-bends and charged up the long drag to the finish line, with times listed below.
The first “race” was 2 laps around the full course with Toby starting on GO and Bernie heading off 5:15 later. Every rider had a target to chase and the ones in the middle also had to keep an eye on the faster racers chasing them down. Toby (guided by and urged on by Pete Wilkinson) held off a fast finishing Richie for a narrow win; the other three riders crossing the line a few seconds behind.
Mark tweaked the handicaps a bit for the final race – two laps clockwise around the short course and again Toby started the proceedings, followed by Richie 1 minute later, then Laura another 10 secs back. Thomas and Bernie had to make up another 10 and 20 secs respectively. Richie and Laura passed Toby at the end of the first lap and Laura had Richie in sight, just failing by a couple of meters to reel him in over the finish line.
Having to race flat out (or nearly so) challenged riders in choosing “racing lines” around the corners and judging their efforts on various sections of the track. Next week’s skills session will continue to build on bike handling skills and applying these in safe racing.
Thanks to Mark & Wilf for running the session, and also to Wilf for this report.
Hope to see you all (plus some new faces) at the track this weekend. If you know someone who would like to try out junior cycling, please encourage them to come along.
