With many riders taking a well earned break over the long weekend, it was a reduced bunch of 15 hardy souls who rolled up to Long Swamp on a bleak winters afternoon for 30km of graded scratch racing.
The reduced numbers meant there were 2 nicely compacted and evenly matched groups of 6 & 7 riders racing A and B grade respectively, with John Ziggy Hiscox and Helen Kennedy rolling off the start line first to kick off the days racing in C grade. With Cols instructions ringing in their ears not to affects each grades race, next off was B grade at 5mins, with a returning Lachie McPhie & Richard Wilko setting a solid pace as riders rolled turns nicely over the first out & back lap. Last up was A grade, with Codie Miller stepping up to the big time and showing some great form and spirit to mix it with a super fast A grade over the first lap.
As the riders hit the 15km turn at the end of the lap 1, it was C grader Ziggy who came through first, with B grade hot on his tail, and with Demon Dean Bourke powering the B grade group along putting several riders in the hurt locker, onlookers were left wondering who he might be working for?! Helen put in a very respectable first lap to roll through just after B grade, and hot on her heels was A grade who had Iron Man Mick Hoult driving the group along at a searing pace.
As A grade powered along Codie and the Eagle had their wings clipped on the outward leg of lap 2 as gaps opened up, and as A grade emerged up the final Dump Hill climb, it was the Chairman Jason Simmonds who showed his G2I form remains intact to storm home for a well deserved win…great effort Jason! Right behind him was Houlty, with Oliver Marshall rounding out the A grade podium in 3rd just ahead of a fast finishing Sean Brennan.
As B grade hit the final ascent of Dump Hill en-mass, Dene peeled off the front and it became clear who all the work had been for, as Cat Burglar Clint Bourke launched a stinging attack which opened a sizeable gap, and in spite of Chris Stace and Andrew May pushing hard at the end it was the Cat took out the win, with Chris taking second, and Andrew 3rd…well done Clint! An exceptional effort saw Olive Tutt take out 4th place, showing tremendous progress. Last to roll over the line in B grade was Dene, who looked very pleased with his days work!
The C grade first place was taken out by Ziggy as he rode the B grade train home on the last lap, with Helen showing a great tenacity to roll in a few minutes later having had to work solo for the last lap…fantastic effort Helen!
Well done to all riders for working well together and respecting the grades; thanks to Houlty for doing the signs again, and Col for marshalling the riders at the turn and clocking the times. Next week we return to Road Race of the Year with 40km of Boorolong on the menu!
