After a lengthy layoff due to Covid-19, we returned to open road racing on Saturday with a 20k TT on Dangarsleigh Road. 16 riders braved a steady 30kph westerly and freezing temperatures that at 3pm was reading “5.3/feels like minus 1.9”.
Ben Boland appeared for his first race with our club and we also welcomed Ken Boldery from Tamworth. Covid-19 safety enforcement led to a few minor changes to proceedings, but everything went smoothly, thanks to Col’s expert race directing. Thanks to Dene for making MANY new signs and fixing up all the old ones – we will need to have longer races to use them all!
Riders started at 30 second intervals to reduce waiting time in the cold and Maria Trainer kicked off proceedings. She showed up everyone in how to ride a TT by clocking nearly identical times for both legs. Hugh translated his ZWIFT efforts onto the road with a strong ride that saw him pass all but Rod on the outward leg and finish first with an overall average of 36.56kph and a PB…well done Hugh! Ben found the solo effort and windy conditions on the return leg tough for his first race – but what doesn’t kill you will only make you stronger! The club’s usual TT aficionados brought out their glistening machines and ALL appertains to have trained hard during the past few months. Keglegs showed his strength in his favourite discipline on the return leg and Dene seems to be working up to A Grade level.
The two Michaels (Harris & Hoult) showed why they are perennial back markers with outward legs under 16 minutes. And despite nearly sabotaging himself with some mechanical problem that saw him leaving on the 8 minute mark John Scott-Hamilton was also had a strong outward leg, closely matched by our Tamworth visitor.
The pace got even hotter on the way home with Michael Harris clocking a neat 14 minutes for the 10k (a stunning 42.86kph), to record an overall time of 29:03, and take out a solid win. Houlty came in second, with the Eagle a solid 3rd.
Well done to all racers for turning out in such challenging comditions – next week’s race will include a few scenic gravel sections along Dangarsleigh Road; see you all there!
