With the MTB crew down in Bright for the Nationals, it was a grizzled group of 21 roadies who rolled up to Boorolong for the first round of the Road Racer of the Year Competition. A sunny afternoon with a bit of a south-westerly wind meant there would to be fast return legs and strong groups at the turn would be tough to reel in.
Dave Jenner set off solo, followed by Mark Haydon returning to racing after a long rest and with a VERY generous handicap of 3min. Then a large group on 7 minutes set off, that would contain the eventual top four place getters.
Five riders made up the 11min group and found it hard to catch up with the frontrunners AND stay ahead of the chasing bunches. Three from this group were unable to finish; Shaun Brennan put in a time that really hurt on the way out and Nathan Paul burned up the road on the way in.
In a similar fashion, the trio of Block riders in the 12min group were able to stay together on the outward leg as Pat Ferris attacked on the long drag up from Dangarsleigh railway and got a bit of a lead.
The 14min Scratch G2I trio of Houlty, Jason and Paul set a searing pace in pursuit of those ahead, and had put in two minutes by the turn around and kept on picking up time and stragglers from the earlier bunches.
But, it was the 7min group that was setting the pace out on course. The group shed three riders on the first climb and then spat out Wilfried at the top of Claremont. The two front runners were reeled in going up the Twisties, with Haydo managing to get on the back. Once the five turned, no one was going to catch them, and it was Wilko who stormed home taking out the sprint (and top RROTY points) from Andrew May in second and Bill Mara rounding out the podium.
Although they were unable to catch the front-runner, the scratch trio stormed home with all 3 riders coming in with a time of 44m17s – and with Jason just edging out the others he recorded the fastest time on the day.
Apologies to riders who finished down the pack who didn’t get an official finish time or placing, as a timer malfunction meant these were not recorded. But fear not, all riders will be allocated the correct RROTY points!
Thanks to Col for running the race and getting the times (without breaking any speed limits)! We are all sure Bryn put out the signs most efficiently, but no one had time to look and admire. Also many thanks to Wilf for this race report.
Next week is one of the highlights of the ACC calendar with the challenging Mur de Dangarsleigh classic! Also the Invergowrie Road Race entries are now open and only a few weekends away so don’t forget to register.
