Due to a racing incident, the round 3 RROTY race results from this Saturday have been voided. But in spite of this we have a stellar race report including video footage that we can thank Pete Harris for. Enjoy!
While the federal election on Saturday was a welcome distraction for a country who has suffered through more ads for the next season of The Voice than is deemed humane by the Geneva Conventions, the real event on Saturday was one that will go into the annuls of time as being the biggest sporting mystery since an 80’s Russian Olympian actually tested negative for steroids.
What happened at the RROTY Round at Boorolong on 18 May 2019?
Sporting pundits and historians are bound to discuss and debate this for years to come – much akin to how Malcolm Turnbull managed to eat pizza with a knife and fork. Anyway, the weather couldn’t be much better for a swift out and back at the old ‘long – everyone should be tucked up at the Bowlo with a frosty well before home time was called by relevant spouses. Temps were pleasant, a 3-4kph wind was just enough to produce a light rustle in the leaves to remind riders that it is indeed May in Armidale and 30 riders made their way to the start line, yet only 29 made it back.
As can be seen by the photos and video footage (see below), the vibe was good, carbon levels were higher than Julia’s tax threshold and there was an air of excitement usually only seen for an NSYNC comeback tour. As usual, the handicapper’s form was on point, producing some scintillating pre-race banter, mainly concerning Clint’s perceived ‘burglar’ award. However, all were away without concern on what turned out to be a very brisk outward leg.
Groups (and many individuals) footage of the 15k turnaround point has delivered more questions than answers. Such was the pace of the outward leg that there were more splinters than the master from Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. The go and chasing group combined into what looked like a potential race winning combination, there were splintered individuals before a largish group rolled through with some noted burglars amongst the mix. The Harris duo of Holly and Dangerous Dave had some quality partners in crime as they set about reeling in the weaponry up the road while Hammy and Jason Simmonds were half hunter/half prey as they successfully held off Missile till the turn. The finish of the race was hence terminated as a touch of wheel brought down a member of this group.
Special mention goes to the large group that stopped and assisted our injured rider who is indeed sore but otherwise ok. Thanks to ACC for proving that good manners and excellent etiquette are the rule and not the exception.
Thanks to Pete for running the race and the excellent race report, and to all riders for looking out for each other. Next Saturday we return to Long Swamp for round 4 of RROTY.
