Dylan Sunderland powered home to a fine victory and Fastest Time this morning in the 2016 Mount Yarrowyck 100K Road Race, smashing his own course record by almost 3 minutes, posting a time of 2h:13:35s at an average speed of over 42kph.

Starting on his own with a 30-minute handicap on the Go group, the Inverell rider made up 1 minute and caught Block by the top of the first hill, setting the tone for the rest of the day. Brother Zak was the only rider who could stay with Dylan for the duration and the pair crossed the finish line 2m:37s ahead of third-placed rider Peter Horwood, giving Inverell a clean sweep of the top 3 places. Frazer Ashford and Ashley Smith put Tamworth on the board in fourth and fifth spots and Mike Hoult was the highest placed Armidale rider in sixth.

Despite an ominous forecast, the rain held off for the race but there was a strong head-wind on the outward leg. The 7-strong combined Scratch and Block group made light work of the wind and caught the 4-rider 21-minute group at the turn. They were still about 7 minutes down on the leaders at this point but it was only a matter of time before they bridged to the main bunch. With 14 kilometres to go, the first of the big climbs saw them hit the front and put time into the rest of the field from there to the finish line.

Literally as the last rider crossed the finish line, the heavens opened and the rain came hammering down which unfortunately meant there was no official presentation ceremony for the winners.

In the 50k race, it was Armidale’s turn, Tom Simmonds, David Cook, Richard Wilkinson and Sam King taking out the top 4 places with Tom also winning fastest time.
