They are some of the biggest names in Armidale sporting history and this weekend, three talismanic heroes do battle on Dangarsleigh Road in the Final Round of the 2017 Road Racer of the Year competition.

Fresh from the Nationals just two weekends ago and in the form of his life, Dave Munday brings bare knuckle, sleeves-rolled-up, ironman power to the contest but last years runner-up is no shoe-in for the title. Mighty Mick Harris has more than handled him this season and the smiling assassin has a burst of speed in his armoury that few have been able to match on the legendary Long Swamp Dump Hill in 2017.
Both will be wary of wildcard Chris Stace who’s a handy bloke on two wheels. Tougher than a shearing shed bench, this guy knows how to sharpen a chainsaw and is once more hitting a bit of form after a season of plenty. Currently sitting pretty on top of the league by a solitary point from Alex Thomas, he is the bookies favourite but needs a healthy handicap in order to survive on the fast undulating Dangarsleigh terrain. Thomas is ruled out due to other commitments and rumour has it, is currently being courted by numerous European pro-continental teams.

The possible permutations are too numerous to mention and with bonus points for the top 5 places anything could happen on the day. Whatever the outcome, it is sure to be an enthralling contest and with numerous riders already offering their services as domestiques on a no-win, no-fee basis, the eagle-eyed commissaires will have their work cut out to ensure fair play.
If you can beg, borrow or steal a bike and fake some ID then make sure you’re on the start line for the Final Round of the 2017 Road Racer of the Year competition. This is going to be the race they talk about for the next fifty years. Make sure you’re part of it – Dangarsleigh Road, 4pm, Saturday November 11th 2017.
