Yes, it’s that time again, the long-awaited, much-anticipated race series that everyone in Armidale Cycling Club desperately wants to win. After a bit of a false start a few weeks back, it now really is time for the Road Racer of the Year competition.
Firmly established in its fifth year, the 2018 series starts this Saturday and is going to be an absolute cracker with a more focused, shorter handicap season where every race and every hard-fought point counts. There are just 10 rounds this year from now and September 15th. Check out the fixture list on the club calendar (just put RROTY in the search box to see the program for 2018).
We’ve had some great contests over the years, starting with Luke ‘San Remo’ Milan’s emergence from early season obscurity in 2014, taking the championship by storm with a monster 137 points despite Jo Wauch’s seemingly unassailable mid-season dominance, and who could forget Dene Bourke’s last race of the season effort on Boorolong in 2015 or Richard Wilkinson’s 2016 victory? Last year it went down to the wire with an incredible last day contest between Chris Stace, Mick Harris and Dave Munday with Chris emerging as our champion on that day.
With only ten rounds in the 2018 edition, every race will count so make sure you roll up on the start line this Saturday on Boorolong at 2:30pm and get your season off to a flying start in the only competition that counts – the Armidale Cycling Club Road Racer of the Year.
The Rules
The competition is open to any Armidale Cycling Club members who automatically qualify for entry with points being awarded as follows:
1st Place 10 points
2nd Place 9 points
3rd Place 8 points
4th Place 7 points
5th Place 6 points
1.4.1 – Turning up and racing but not placed 1st to 5th, 3 points
1.4.2 – Signs duty and running the race, 4 points –
1.4.2.1 – It is possible be on sign duty and race if someone else volunteers to run the race. In this case the person on sign duty will receive the standard points should they place in the top 5, or 4 points for placing outside the top 5, but not both.
1.4.3 – If a non-club member is racing in a RROTY event, they will not qualify for bonus points. If they finish in the top-5 then their bonus points will go to the next finishing Armidale rider.
